Ambassador John Jackson CEO of Esports Wales set up the organisation back in 2018 with just a handful of volunteers to develop the esports scene within Wales and see it compete on a national level. His aim was to ensure there was a community where people can go and learn about the industry, network, and find out about events.
Tell us a little bit more about what you do.
As the founder and CEO of Esports Wales, my passion for esports is steadfast, fostering the growth of the ecosystem in Wales, from its grassroots origins to the heights of professional play. My role involves various initiatives, including managing the national team, bolstering the Welsh esports league, forging partnerships with colleges and universities, to advance the esports scene in Wales, and collaborating with the Welsh Government to bring more events and conferences to Wales for the creative industries.
How important is it to create the right talent in Wales, for the nation to be acknowledged as a world leader in this sector ?
From primary school to the professional workforce, we are cultivating the ability to create, develop, and nurture this remarkable talent throughout the industry. Collaborating with strategic partners like the Wales Rugby Union, Welsh Government, and educational institutions from primary to university level building growth.
Additionally, our academy supports the development of transferable skills within the creative industries sector.
How is the Creative Industries Sector attracting more people to Wales ?
The Creative Industries sector is drawing more individuals to Wales by developing a world-class skills base, expanding support across the sector, and positioning Wales as an ideal destination for creative businesses and business events. This sector not only generates jobs and wealth but also contributes to a strong national brand, promoting Welsh culture and talent globally.
More recently, the Creative Sector in Wales has excelled by engaging in new initiatives and technology coming through. In recent years, Wales has become increasingly attractive to businesses. Rocket Science, a global esports and gaming company, has established a new hub in South Wales, the multi-award-winning Wales Interactive is expanding its portfolio, and in the realm of esports, partnerships with other sports entities are rapidly evolving, leading to active involvement and the management of clubs within the many esports leagues.

What is important to you as a Wales Conference Ambassador ?
As a Wales Conference Ambassador, it is important to me to embody the spirit of Wales and champion it as a leading destination for meetings and events. This role involves harnessing personal expertise and enthusiasm to attract global events, thereby fostering economic growth and showcasing the cultural and academic excellence of Wales. As ambassadors we are passionate about the Welsh heritage and connections, and we leverage these to promote Wales' world-leading business and academic opportunities, as well as its rich cultural legacy. Volunteering our time and energy to bid for events that can bring significant value to Wales, and in doing so, we become part of a collaborative and inspiring team that is unapologetically ambitious for Wales and all it has to offer.
