Background

The College and University Business Officers (CUBO) Summer Conference, organised by Assured Events, is an awards ceremony which celebrates outstanding achievements within commercial and campus services. The seventh CUBO Awards were held at Swansea University in July 2019.

CUBO represents universities across the UK and Ireland as ‘the professional association for senior managers of university commercial and campus services’ and aims to ‘promote excellence in the development of campus life and student experience’.

The three-day premier networking event was packed with learning, networking and business, with catching up with colleagues from universities and suppliers at its heart.

Challenge

The Summer Conference is CUBO’s flagship event and requires meticulous planning. The event brings together 300 delegates from across the UK and Ireland and requires a venue that can provide a suitable plenary, a large number of breakout spaces, networking spaces with a ‘WOW’ factor – all within easy reach of onsite accommodation and in a convenient geographical location. In addition, there was a requirement to house an exhibition close to the other activities of the conference.

Solution

After an extensive search Swansea University was chosen as it could easily meet all the logistical requirements of the event, including a purpose-built exhibition marquee close to the event – providing valuable opportunities for exhibitors to network with delegates.

State of the art lecture theatres, ample breakout rooms and impressive spaces for a gala dinner and networking activities were all within touching distance of the onsite accommodation, which was provided at a competitive cost to delegates. The annual awards took advantage of the Great Hall Auditorium and adjacent terrace overlooking scenic Swansea Bay

The University team worked closely with the event organisers to deliver added value to the delegate experience including a Welsh themed gala dinner catered by the in-house team, room drops of Welsh themed gifts and Welsh cakes freshly baked in the exhibition space.
